Upcoming online events for aspiring horror writers

This August and September, would-be horror writers can attend virtual workshops with event organiser Alex Davis and an assortment of very appealing guests.

Darkness in the Fields (10 September, £30) is a day-long event focussed on writing folk horror. The guest workshoppers are Stephanie Ellis (The Five Turns of the Wheel), Tracy Fahey (New Music for Old Rituals), and Coy Hall (Grimoire of the Four Impostors). The Eventbrite blurb is as follows:

‘Folk Horror is enjoying a resurgence in 2022 in both books and movies, and this day-long event will explore the subgenre with a series of workshops for writers within or looking to explore the field. Featuring some of the most exciting writing talent in the scene, this is a not to missed online session for anyone wanting to explore the darkness in the fields…’

Guest-led sessions include talks on landscape as character, mythology, archetypes, and historical settings. Click here to read the full schedule and book a place.

Shadow Seasons (starting 8 September, £55 – £165) is a similar event to First Fears, which ran during the summer. Like the previous programme, it’s a six week online writing school with several published writers of horror fiction, including Dan Coxon (previously shortlisted for a Shirley Jackson award), Francine Toon (author of the Sunday Times bestseller Pine) and Ally Wilkes (All the White Spaces). Pricing depends on the level of participation, so read more and book your place here.

Lastly, if you can’t wait till September, Alex Davis is also running a day of horror writing workshops in August called Horror Bites (13 August, £28). The blurb is as follows:

‘Horror Bites serves up a series of short horror writing workshops, covering some of the most essentials elements of the genre, including atmosphere, characterisation, pacing, writing violence and more. Led by horror writer, workshopper and Creative Writing Lecturer Alex Davis, HORROR BITES gives you the chance to take a big bite of horror or select some light bites from the workshop buffet…’

There are separate workshops on atmosphere, pacing, violence and characterisation in horror, with a talk on horror in publishing to round off the programme. Read more and book your tickets here.
