Another Chance to see Jeremy Lovering’s
In Fear
by Ellis Reed
In Fear, the 2013 British psychological horror from writer/director Jeremy Lovering, will be shown tonight at 2.20am on Film4 – and for those of us who aren’t nocturnal, it will also be available to stream on All 4.
This is a great chance to see a highly regarded home-grown horror, certified fresh with 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. Film4’s synopsis is as follows:
‘Driving to a music festival, Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy (Alice Englert) have plans to stay at a remote countryside hotel. But when signs lead them in circles they are soon trapped in a maze of back-roads, with only their vehicle for protection from an unseen tormentor hell-bent on exploiting their worst nightmares. Driving, lost and tormented in the night, primal fears of the dark and unknown become real, as the couple realise they may have let the evil in, or that it was always there.’
Production-wise, it’s an exercise in minimalism, with a cast of two that eventually becomes three – but ‘rarely have so few commonplace ingredients produced so many uncommon chills,’ according to the New York Times. Lovering was also a second unit director on Hot Fuzz (2007) and Last Night in Soho (2021), so this isn’t his only contribution to British horror. Check out the trailer below, or just roll the dice and watch it on All4.
